While the tropical climate of The Maldives offers its own charm... Navigating pregnancy in such an environment requires a little bit of extra strength, care and consideration (especially the first trimester!!)
If you're lucky - you will start to feel more like yourself again in the second trimester, you may have more motivation, more energy and a positive attitude which was lost in the first couple of months of your pregnancy. Fear not, it is possible to thrive amidst the tropics and here are some invaluable tips to help you stay comfortable, healthy, and positively radiant during this special time.
Hydration
In the tropical Maldives, hydration is your best friend. Pregnancy may trigger your body to perspire more, making it essential to replenish your body's moisture regularly. I personally craved cold water and couldn't drink it at room temperature - so keep lots of space in the fridge for chilled bottles! We also invested in a water dispenser to avoid keep buying single-use bottles - just a thought!
Keep your water bottle close at hand and sip throughout the day. And why stop there? Treat yourself to the wonder of coconut water, nature's own hydrating elixir, to keep your spirits high and your body refreshed. You can easily get this from the Fruit & Veg markets in Hulhumale or Male.
Dress for Comfort
We're in the Maldives, so embrace the airy freedom of loose, breathable fabrics that allow your skin to BREATHE. Loose cotton and linen fabrics become your best friends in the battle against the heat, allowing your body to breathe and move with ease.
Let your wardrobe reflect the carefree spirit of the tropics, with beautiful flowing dresses that celebrate the miracle of life within you.
Protect your Skin
While basking in the tropical sun, it's essential to shield yourself from its UV rays because pregnancy hormones render your skin more susceptible to sun damage, making sunscreen your friend. Opt for a high SPF formula and don't forget your oversized sunglasses for added protection.
Stay Inside during the Day Time
I made the mistake of taking Maia to the park around 1pm to stretch her wake time and it was a HUGE mistake! It was actually unbearable with the sun and heat, even little Maia was sweating.
When the tropical heat reaches its zenith, it's time to seek shaded havens and air-conditioned sanctuaries. If you have one, don't hesitate to indulge in a leisurely dip in the pool or a rejuvenating shower to wash away the heat.
Nourishing Foods
Most likely after your first trimester, when your appetite returns to normal, I would recommend indulging in the fruits and vegetables that are easily available to you.
Pregnancy is a time of nourishment and celebration, and what better way to honour this journey than with tropical delights? Embrace the vibrant flavours of fresh fruits, crisp salads, and succulent fish that abound in this lush paradise.
Nourish your body with nutrient-rich meals that fuel both you and your growing baby, ensuring a journey filled with vitality and vibrancy.

Mosquitoes
It's important to be mindful of potential risks, including mosquito-borne illnesses. Arm yourself against these with insect repellents and machines in your home.
Embracing the Rhythm of Motherhood
As you embark on this sacred journey, remember to honour the rhythms of your body and spirit. Engage in gentle exercise routines that nourish your soul and strengthen your connection with your growing baby. Whether it's a walk along the shoreline or a serene yoga session, let movement be your guide as you embrace the beauty of pregnancy in all its glory!
